Product Description
The Wolverines played their first varsity game 100 years ago — Jan. 12, 1923, at The Coliseum on the corner of Hill and Fifth Street. U-M beat Wisconsin, 2-1, in the inaugural contest.
The Michigan Daily recapped the game as follows:
"More than 600 people went wild with enthusiasm at the Inauguration of hockey as a Varsity sport at the Coliseum last night a game in which Michigan netted two goals to one for Wisconsin, but only after two five-minute overtime periods had been required to break the tie which had been knotted at one all at the end of the three regular 15 minute periods.
At no time during the 55 minutes of play was either team sufficiently superior to the other to be given an advantage. Both showed some brilliant individual play but the combination was lacking for the most part due to the fact that neither squad has had more than 10 days’ practice. The Badgers had a more effective combination play than the Maize and Blue but at best it was weak. The terrific speed developed in the game, sharp collisions, and heavy checking was a realization to the spectators, many of them witnessing the sport for the first time."
